SAP Reorder Point and Safety Stock Field Calculator
Reorder point planning in SAP relies on two fields you maintain by hand: the reorder point and the safety stock. This calculator turns demand, variability and lead time into values ready to key into the MRP 1 view.
Your numbers
Average consumption per working day.
Standard deviation of daily consumption.
Planned delivery time (PLIFZ) plus goods receipt processing time (WEBAZ) in days.
Your results
Assumes normally distributed daily demand and constant lead time. Intermittent demand, supply variability and lumpy orders need other methods. Validate results against your MRP controller before mass updating.
Safety stock vs lead time
Sweeps Planned delivery time plus GR processing from 1 to 60, holding your other inputs fixed.
Reorder point audit from SAP data
Optional expert review of how to audit reorder points against real consumption in SAP.
Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.
How to use the calculator
Enter average daily demand and its standard deviation from consumption history, such as the last twelve months. Add the planned delivery time plus the goods receipt processing time in days, choose a service level and enter the unit cost and lot size. The calculator returns safety stock, reorder point, the value tied up in safety stock and an approximate maximum stock. The chart shows how safety stock and reorder point grow as lead time lengthens, so you can see the cost of a slow supplier.
The formulas
Safety stock equals the Z score for the service level times the standard deviation of daily demand times the square root of lead time. The reorder point is average daily demand times lead time plus safety stock. The Z score comes from the inverse normal distribution, so a 95 percent service level uses about 1.65 and 99 percent uses about 2.33. This assumes demand varies from day to day but lead time is constant. If supplier lead time varies too, the real safety stock must be higher.
Entering the values in SAP
In the MRP 1 view of the material master, set the MRP type to a reorder point procedure such as VB for manual reorder point planning, and enter the reorder point and the safety stock. The planned delivery time is in the MRP 2 view and the goods receipt processing time in the same area. MRP creates a requisition or planned order when available stock falls to the reorder point. Check that the lot sizing procedure fits, since a fixed lot smaller than demand over lead time will trigger repeated orders.
Common mistakes
Using total calendar days when consumption is measured per working day mixes units. Setting safety stock from a worst-case month inflates inventory. Ignoring open orders in the reorder logic is another common error, since available stock counts open receipts in SAP. Reviewing values only once and never again leaves them stale as demand shifts, so refresh reorder points on a schedule or let automatic forecasting suggest them.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are EISBE and MINBE in SAP?
EISBE is the safety stock field and MINBE is the reorder point field in the MARC plant data table, shown in the MRP 1 view. Reorder point planning uses MINBE as the trigger and EISBE as the buffer.
Which MRP type uses a reorder point?
VB is reorder point planning with manual reorder point and manual safety stock. VM is the same with automatic reorder point and forecast. PD is deterministic MRP that plans from requirements rather than a reorder point.
Does the reorder point include safety stock?
Yes. A common definition is demand during replenishment lead time plus safety stock. In SAP, MRP compares available stock to the reorder point, and safety stock is part of the buffer within that value.
How often should I recalculate?
Review at least quarterly for fast-moving items and when lead time or demand changes materially. Automate the calculation where you can, so values do not drift.
Netray can compute reorder points and safety stock from your actual consumption history in SAP and propose changes for approval, with no automatic write-back.
