How to Issue Material in Epicor Kinetic

Question
how to issue material in epicor

  • epicor issue material to job

Short answer

In Epicor Kinetic you issue material to a job either manually with Issue Material (against the job material line, from a bin and lot) or automatically through backflush when labor is reported. Substitutions are handled by changing the job material part or using the alternate part on the material line, and requests can be routed through the material queue so the warehouse pulls and issues them.

Applies to: Epicor Kinetic and ERP 10.x with Job Management and Inventory Management; Advanced Material Management adds queue-driven pulls.

Issue material to a job

  1. 1Confirm the job is released and the material line is not already fully issued. Check Job Entry, Materials tab.
  2. 2Open Issue Material from the menu search, or use the issue action from the job material line.
  3. 3Select the job, assembly and material sequence you are issuing against.
  4. 4Choose the from warehouse and bin, and the lot or serial number if the part is tracked.
  5. 5Enter the quantity. Issue to the material line, not to the job in general, so costs and requirements stay correct.
  6. 6Save the transaction. The issued quantity updates on the material line and the on-hand drops.
  7. 7If the material should consume automatically, set the line to backflush so it issues when operation quantities are reported.
  8. 8Check that the issued quantity and cost appear on the job before closing the operation.

Manual issue versus backflush

Manual issue gives you control. Someone picks the parts, issues them to the job and the system records exact lot, bin and cost. It suits expensive, serialized or lot controlled items.

Backflush issues material based on completed operation quantity. It saves transactions for cheap components but depends on accurate on-hand and bin defaults. If stock is wrong, backflush can drive negative inventory or fail.

Many shops mix both: backflush for fasteners and bulk, manual for key components. The choice is a flag on the job material line, defaulted from the BOM.

Material substitution

If a different part is used, update the job material to the substitute before issuing, so the right part is consumed and costed. Where your engineering setup defines alternates, use those; otherwise add the replacement as a new material line and remove or reduce the original.

Changing material on a released job can affect planning, purchasing demand and traceability, so follow your change-control rules. For regulated work, record the reason.

Material request queue

A material queue lets production request material from the warehouse. The warehouse sees the open requests, pulls to the job and issues, so shop-floor users do not touch inventory directly.

This is useful in larger plants where stores and production are separate roles. It requires the relevant material management features to be enabled and security assigned to the right groups.

Common pitfalls

  • !Issuing from a bin with no on-hand and creating negative inventory.
  • !Issuing to the wrong assembly sequence on multi-level jobs.
  • !Substituting a part without updating the job, so costs and traceability are wrong.
  • !Backflushing without keeping bin and on-hand accurate.
  • !Giving shop-floor users inventory adjustment rights when the queue would do.

How an ERP-grounded AI assistant handles this

A grounded assistant can answer why a job shows material short, which jobs are waiting on issue and where stock sits in other bins, from live data. It can propose an issue or substitution for a stores person to approve; it does not post transactions without that approval.

Frequently asked questions

How do I issue material to a job in Epicor?

Use Issue Material, select the job, assembly and material sequence, choose the warehouse, bin and lot, enter the quantity and save. The issued quantity then shows on the job material line.

What is backflush in Epicor?

Backflush consumes material automatically when you report operation quantities, instead of issuing it by hand. It is a flag on the job material line and relies on accurate inventory.

Can I substitute a part on a released job?

Yes, by changing or adding the material line, subject to your change control. Do it before issuing so cost and traceability follow the part actually used.

Why can I not issue material to a job?

Common causes are the job not released, the material line fully issued, no on-hand in the chosen bin, or missing security. Check each in that order.

Epicor Kinetic: Job Will Not Release in Job Entry

A job in Epicor Kinetic will not release when it is not Engineered, when a material or operation fails validation, or when the part revision on the job is not approved. Open Job Entry, confirm the Engineered flag first, fix any part, revision or method errors shown in the exception panel, then tick Released.

Epicor MRP Runs but Generates No Suggestions

When Epicor's MRP process completes without a job or purchase suggestion for a part you expect one for, the cause is almost always the part's own configuration (Part Class Type, Make Direct, Non-MRP flag, planning Time Fence) or the demand not being linked in a way MRP recognizes, not a defect in the MRP engine. Work through the part's Planning tab, its safety stock and lead time setup, and the demand source (sales order line status, job material requirement) before assuming the run itself failed.

How-to

Epicor Kinetic Costing Workbench: Part Cost, Rollup and Material Burden

In Epicor Kinetic, part cost is held in cost buckets (material, labor, burden, subcontract, material burden) per costing method. The Costing Workbench is where you view and maintain those costs, and a cost rollup walks the bill of materials and routing to compute a standard cost from lower levels. Material burden is a percentage or amount added on top of material cost, set in costing configuration rather than on the BOM.

Fixing Epicor BusinessObjectException: BPM Directive Errors

A BusinessObjectException that says "A Business Process Management (BPM) directive has raised the following error" means a directive on that business object stopped the transaction, either deliberately via a Raise Exception widget or accidentally via an unhandled .NET error in Custom Code. Expand the InnerException on the error dialog to see the real message and the directive name, then open BPM Designer for that object and method to find the widget that fired.

Fixing a Slow Epicor BAQ (Business Activity Query)

A slow BAQ in Epicor is usually caused by unindexed join columns, a subquery or calculated field forcing a table scan, or the BAQ pulling far more rows than the dashboard actually displays before filtering client-side. Fix it by reading the SQL Server execution plan Epicor generates, moving filters into the BAQ criteria instead of the dashboard filter panel, and replacing subqueries with joins where possible.

Error fix

Fixing Epicor REST v2 API 401 Unauthorized Errors

A 401 Unauthorized calling Epicor's REST v2 (api/v2/odata) endpoint almost always comes down to one of three things: a missing or wrong x-api-key header, valid credentials but an API key scoped to a different company than the one in the URL, or REST services simply not enabled for that endpoint. Confirm the API key exists and is active in Application Studio (or the classic REST API help page), matches the company segment in the URL, and that the account used for Basic auth or OAuth has the right security group.
