Aerospace Material Review Board (MRB) Disposition Template
AS9100 clause 8.7 requires controlled handling of nonconforming outputs, and the Material Review Board is how aerospace shops record the decision. This template captures the defect, rationale, authority and follow-up in one document.

Material Review Board Disposition
MRB number: MRB-2026-0318 NCR reference: NCR-26-0771 Part: PN-48213 Rev C Quantity: 6 Lot or serial: Lot 26-1140, S/N 0012 to 0017 Date: 2026-10-20
Nonconformance
Bore diameter measured 25.043 mm against drawing requirement of 25.000 +0.025 / -0.000 mm on 6 pieces. Oversize by 0.018 mm.
Suspected Cause and Containment
Cause: Boring bar insert wear exceeded tool life limit. Tool offset not updated after insert change.
Containment: Quarantine lot 26-1140 in MRB cage. Sort and 100 percent inspect remaining WIP for bore diameter.
Disposition and Rationale
Disposition: Repair
Rationale: Oversize bore can be sleeved per approved repair procedure RP-118. Stress analysis confirms no change in fit or function once repaired.
Customer approval: Yes, pending

MRB Approvals
Use as-is and repair dispositions on designs where you do not hold design authority normally need customer approval. Confirm authority limits in your quality manual and purchase order. This is a template, not legal or regulatory advice.
Trace suspect lots automatically
Optional: discuss querying ERP lot genealogy to find every lot touched by the same cause.
Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.
How to use the template
Start from the NCR and copy the quantity, lot and defect description into the form. Add the engineering rationale the board relied on, choose a disposition, and state whether customer approval is required. Print or export a PDF, collect signatures, and attach inspection data and photographs. Keep the form with the lot until the disposition is closed.
- Link every MRB to an NCR
- State the measured value and the requirement
- Explain why the disposition is safe
- Record containment of suspect product elsewhere
Disposition options and authority
Rework brings a part back to drawing requirements. Repair accepts a part that will not fully meet the requirement but is made usable. Use as is accepts the part without change. Repair and use as is often depart from the design, so unless you hold design authority the customer must approve the decision before the part ships.
Writing a defensible rationale
A good rationale references data, not opinion. Cite the measurement, the drawing requirement, the engineering analysis or approved repair procedure, and the effect on form, fit, function and life. Reviewers reject statements such as engineering says it is fine. Name the person with authority and the document that supports the conclusion.
Common mistakes
Frequent problems include closing the MRB without finding the cause, dispositioning only the parts found rather than the suspect population, skipping customer approval, and shipping repaired parts without marking the paperwork. Add a corrective action when the defect could recur, and confirm the quarantine is physical, not only in the ERP.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who must sit on an MRB?
Typically quality and engineering with authority over the design and process, plus the customer when required. Your quality manual should define the members and their limits. The form records who approved the decision.
When is customer approval needed?
When the disposition departs from the drawing or specification, such as use as is or repair, and you are not the design authority. Your contract and flow-downs define the exact rule.
Can scrap be decided without MRB?
Many shops allow quality to scrap clearly unusable parts under a procedure. Use the MRB when there is a decision to make about acceptability, such as use as is or repair.
How long should MRB records be kept?
Keep them for at least the retention period stated in your contract and procedures. Aerospace programs often require long retention, so follow the strictest flow-down you have.
If your NCRs and lot genealogy live in the ERP, Netray can help trace which other lots share the same cause and flag them before they ship.
