Material Review Board (MRB) Disposition Template
A material review board decides what happens to nonconforming material that cannot simply be reworked or scrapped by routine rule. This template records the finding, the engineering rationale, the disposition and who agreed, in the order auditors and customers look for it.

Nonconformance and governing requirement
Wall thickness 2.38 mm at section A, minimum per drawing 2.50 mm. Found at in process inspection.
Engineering analysis and rationale
Stress engineering reviewed margin of safety at the thin section. Positive margin retained under limit and ultimate load cases per memo ST-0418.
Board disposition
Disposition: Use as is Customer approval required: Yes Customer approval reference and date: ____________________
Cost impact
No rework cost. Customer concession fee not applicable.
Follow up actions
Open CAPA for tool wear on the profile cutter. Notify supplier of raw material variation.
Board members
A starting point, not a controlled form. Many contracts limit what a supplier MRB may dispose without customer approval, for example use as is and repair. Check your contract, AS9100 requirements and your approved MRB procedure.
Track MRB dispositions in your ERP
Optional: we can review how holds, dispositions and approvals are handled in your ERP and suggest a reporting view.
Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.
How to use the MRB template
Open the form after an NCR is written and containment is in place. Enter the part, revision, quantity and the requirement that was missed. Record the engineering analysis in enough detail that a reader can follow why the disposition is acceptable, such as margin of safety, fit and function, or processing history. Select the disposition and state whether customer approval is needed and obtained. Capture cost impact and any follow up action, then have each board member sign. Attach it to the NCR and the shipping records.
- Write the rationale, not just the decision.
- Note who has disposition authority.
- Record customer approval reference and date.
- Open a CAPA for repeated causes.
Typical dispositions explained
Use as is accepts the part with a documented rationale that it still meets form, fit, function and safety. Repair brings the part to an acceptable, but not drawing conforming, state using an approved procedure. Rework returns it to full drawing conformance by reprocessing. Scrap removes it from use, and return to supplier sends it back for credit or replacement. A deviation or waiver asks the customer to accept a departure. Use as is and repair generally need customer approval in aerospace and defense contracts.
Common mistakes
Common MRB problems include dispositioning without a technical rationale, letting people outside the board approve use as is, and failing to tell the customer when the contract requires it. Another is treating MRB as the end of the matter: the cause still needs correction. Maintain a log so repeated defects on the same part number stand out. Also keep traceability, so accepted material remains linked to the MRB record through serial or lot numbers into the final data package.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who sits on a material review board?
Typically quality, design or stress engineering, and manufacturing engineering, with procurement for supplier material and a customer representative where the contract demands. The exact membership and authority are defined in your MRB procedure.
Do all dispositions need customer approval?
No. Scrap and conforming rework normally do not. Use as is and repair often do, especially when the part is a design controlled item. The contract and flow down clauses decide, so check them for each program.
What is the difference between an NCR and an MRB record?
The NCR reports the nonconformance and containment. The MRB record documents the board's engineering assessment and formal disposition of items that need that level of review. Many sites link both by number.
Can an MRB decision be reversed?
A decision can be reopened if new data appears, but the change should be recorded as a new review with the original linked. Do not edit a signed record. Parts already shipped may need customer notification.
If your ERP holds quality holds, lots and dispositions, we can help surface MRB history and open items in one view.
