Oracle EBS Cycle Count Program Workload Planner
Oracle Inventory generates cycle count requests from ABC classes and the count frequency you set for each. Before configuring them, you need to know whether the frequencies you want are affordable with the people you have. This planner turns frequency choices into counts per day and hours.
| ABC class | Items in class (items) | Counts per item per year (counts) | Minutes per count (min) | Counts per year | Counter hours per year | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
4,800 | 320 | |||||
6,000 | 300 | |||||
6,000 | 250 | |||||
0 | 0 |
Edit the classes, item counts, frequencies and minutes per count to match your site. Daily figures assume 250 working days and FTE assumes 1,800 productive hours per person. Frequency per class is entered when you define the cycle count classes in Oracle Inventory. Time per count should include travel, recount of variances and entry.
Cycle count accuracy by class
An optional review of how to report count accuracy and adjustment value from EBS.
Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.
How to use it
Start with the item count in each ABC class from your ABC compile, then enter the counts per item per year you want for each class and the average minutes per count. The worksheet computes counts per year and counter hours, then rolls them up to counts per working day and an FTE equivalent. Add or remove rows for other classes, or different warehouses, and export to Excel to share with the warehouse team. Adjust frequencies until the daily workload fits the counter capacity.
- Class A often counted monthly, B quarterly, C annually
- Include recount time for variances
- Run one worksheet per subinventory type if count times differ
How the logic maps to Oracle
In Oracle Inventory you define a cycle count with an ABC assignment group and set the number of counts per year for each class, plus tolerances for adjustments. The cycle count scheduler then generates count requests across working days so they spread through the year. This tool reproduces that arithmetic at the planning level: items times counts per year gives annual counts, and dividing by working days gives the daily number of requests, which is what your counters will see on the count list.
Worked example
With the sample rows, class A has 400 items counted 12 times, or 4,800 counts. Class B adds 6,000, class C adds 6,000, so the total is 16,800 counts a year, about 67 per day. At 3 to 4 minutes each, that is roughly 3.4 hours of counting a day, under half an FTE. If the warehouse wants class C quarterly instead of annually, the daily count jumps by more than 150, and you can see immediately whether the plan is realistic.
Common mistakes
Programs fail when frequencies are set without asking who will do the counting, when transaction freeze periods are not planned, or when variance investigations are not budgeted. Counting only the items that are easy to reach biases the accuracy figure. Another mistake is leaving the ABC classes stale: recompile on a regular schedule so fast movers are reclassified. Measure record accuracy and adjust frequencies by class, not for the whole warehouse.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many counts per year should class A get?
There is no universal number. Many sites count A items monthly or more, B quarterly and C once or twice a year. Choose based on item value, movement and the accuracy you need, then confirm the workload is affordable.
Does Oracle generate the schedule automatically?
Yes. A cycle count definition with ABC classes and counts per year generates count requests on a schedule, and you set tolerances for approvals of adjustments. This worksheet helps you size the effort before you configure it.
What should minutes per count include?
Travel to the location, the count, data entry or scanning and recounts when the first count differs from the system. Time actual counts for a week and use the average rather than a guess.
Is cycle counting a replacement for the annual physical?
Often yes, if the program reaches high accuracy, is documented and your auditors accept it. Discuss with your controller and auditors before you stop the physical inventory.
Netray can read cycle count history from your EBS and show accuracy by class, location and counter, with suggested frequency changes.
