Oracle EBS WIP Accounting Class Reference

A WIP accounting class decides where the cost of a job is accumulated and where its variances go. Choosing the wrong class is a common cause of confusing WIP and variance balances in Oracle EBS.

ItemGroupApplies toDescription
Standard Discrete
Class type
Standard production jobs
Normal manufacturing jobs that build inventory assemblies, costed to WIP and variances.
Repetitive Assembly
Class type
Repetitive schedules
Used for line-based repetitive production rather than individual jobs.
Asset Non-standard
Class type
Non-standard jobs for assets
Rework, refurbishment or asset-capitalised work, with costs capitalised.
Expense Non-standard
Class type
Non-standard expense jobs
Maintenance, prototype or R and D work where cost is expensed on close.
Material account
Valuation account
All production classes
Holds the cost of components issued to the job.
Material overhead account
Valuation account
Standard Discrete, Repetitive
Holds material overhead absorbed on component issues.
Resource account
Valuation account
All production classes
Holds labor and machine charges applied to the job.
Overhead account
Valuation account
All production classes
Holds resource and department overhead absorbed.
Outside processing account
Valuation account
All production classes
Holds the cost of outside processing operations.
Material variance account
Variance account
Standard costing
Receives the difference between actual and standard material usage and cost.
Resource variance account
Variance account
Standard costing
Receives resource rate and efficiency variance.
Overhead variance account
Variance account
Standard costing
Receives over or under absorbed overhead.
Outside processing variance account
Variance account
Standard costing
Receives variance on outside processing charges.
Standard cost variance account
Variance account
Standard costing
Receives variances from standard cost changes on WIP.

The available account fields differ by costing method and release. Account defaults are set per organization in WIP Accounting Classes, and jobs inherit them at creation. Verify the exact field names on your instance.

WIP variance review

Optional: we can analyze job variance data from your EBS system and explain the largest drivers.

How to use this reference

Filter by group to see the class types, the valuation accounts or the variance accounts. When you set up a new organization, use the table as a design checklist for what to configure in the WIP Accounting Classes window. Export to Excel and fill in the actual GL account combinations beside each row for sign-off by the controller.

Class types and where costs go

Standard discrete classes are for normal production, and the job is linked to an inventory assembly. Non-standard classes are for jobs without a standard assembly, such as rework or maintenance. Asset non-standard jobs capitalise the cost, while expense jobs charge it to the expense account on close.

  • Standard Discrete: build inventory assemblies
  • Repetitive Assembly: line-based schedules
  • Asset Non-standard: capitalised rework and projects
  • Expense Non-standard: maintenance and R and D

Valuation versus variance accounts

Valuation accounts carry the cost of work in process while a job is open. Variance accounts are used when the job is closed, to hold the difference between what was charged to the job and what was credited to inventory at standard cost. Review variance accounts regularly, because large balances point to wrong BOM quantities, routings or standard rates.

Common mistakes

A frequent mistake is using one accounting class for every job, so finance cannot separate rework from production. Another is changing accounts on a class after jobs have been created, which does not change existing jobs. Plan the class structure during design and review it whenever a new job type appears.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are WIP accounting classes stored?

They are stored in WIP_ACCOUNTING_CLASSES, by organization and class code, with the class type and the accounts. Discrete jobs hold the class code in WIP_DISCRETE_JOBS.

What is a non-standard job?

A non-standard job does not have to build a standard inventory assembly. It is used for rework, refurbishment, maintenance or projects that need material and resource tracking without a normal assembly.

Can I change a job's class after release?

Generally not once there are transactions. The class and its accounts are fixed on the job, so changing them usually requires cancelling and recreating, or an approved correction.

Do these accounts differ for average costing?

Yes, some variance accounts apply only to standard costing, and average costing handles variances differently. Check the Oracle Cost Management documentation for your costing method.

If you are reviewing WIP and variance balances before a close or an upgrade, we can help analyze job cost data from your EBS database.
