How to use it

Fill in the fields on the left and the document updates on the right. Use it in the design workshop, then circulate the PDF or Word export for approval. The decisions table captures the choices that matter most: ledger, costing method, item master organization, calendar, locator control and negative balance policy. Add subinventories and open points as the workshop proceeds, and keep the signed version with your project records.

  • Complete it with finance in the room, since costing drives accounts
  • Record who owns each open point
  • Version the document when decisions change

Decisions that are hard to change

Costing method is the classic example: once transactions exist, changing method is a project in itself. The item master organization controls which attributes are shared and which are organization specific, so poor choices cause duplicated maintenance. Lot, serial and locator control also affect every transaction, so decide with warehouse and quality teams. Treat these as design decisions with sign-off, not as setup details.

Subinventories and accounts

Subinventories split an organization into storage areas such as stores, raw material and finished goods. Each has attributes including whether quantity is tracked, whether it is an asset or expense subinventory, and which accounts apply. Plan these alongside your chart of accounts and agree naming conventions early, because codes are visible in reports and often hard-coded into integrations and customizations.

Common mistakes

Teams often finalize the organization before the calendar is aligned with the ledger, then discover period mismatches at first close. Another is allowing negative balances to ease go-live, which hides data quality issues and can distort cost. Also avoid setting up too many subinventories; each adds counting, security and reporting work. Review the document with warehouse supervisors who actually operate it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this an official Oracle document?

No. It is a generic template you can adapt. Oracle's own implementation guides define the exact setup steps and parameter names for your release, and you should follow those when configuring.

Can I change costing method later?

Technically possible under conditions, but it is a controlled process, often requiring no open transactions or a conversion plan. Treat it as a one-time design decision.

Who should sign this off?

At minimum the business owner of the plant, finance, and the implementation lead. Add quality or logistics if lot, serial or locator control is involved.

Does it cover manufacturing parameters?

It focuses on inventory. WIP parameters, planning parameters and BOM parameters are separate and can be documented in a similar format.
