SAP Integration Test Case Matrix Worksheet

Interface testing fails when only the happy path is checked. This matrix gives you a simple place to list scenarios, expected results and outcomes, and gets a pass rate you can report at the test exit meeting.

Set Passed to 1 when the status is Passed, otherwise 0, so the pass rate updates. Cover happy path, bad data, duplicates, volume and connection failure for every interface.

Interface regression test review

Share your test matrix and get feedback on missing error paths and duplicates handling.

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.

How to use the matrix

List each interface and write scenarios in plain language. Fill the input column with what you will send, such as a message type, a key field value or a file name, and the expected result with both the technical outcome and the business outcome. For example, status 53 on the IDoc and a sales order with the correct partner functions. Mark the status after the run and set the Passed flag to 1 for passes. The summary rolls up pass rate and cases not passed. Export to Excel for the test report or attach the PDF to the release approval.

  • Write the expected technical and business result
  • Record tester and date for audit
  • Link defects to the case number

Scenarios every interface needs

Beyond a successful message, include the cases that usually break in production. Send a message with a missing mandatory field, an unknown master record and a closed posting period. Send the same message twice to confirm duplicate handling. Send a large message and a burst of messages to see work process behaviour. Stop the receiver or the RFC destination and confirm that statuses and retries behave as expected. Test the monitoring: does the failure appear where support looks, such as WE02, BD87 or the middleware monitor, and does an alert fire?

Reading the pass rate

A pass rate is only as good as the case list. One hundred percent on five easy cases means little. Look at which categories are covered and at blocked cases, which often hide integration problems with the other system. Set an exit rule before testing starts, for example all critical interface cases passed and no open severity 1 or 2 defects. Use the defects column to see which interface carries the risk, and retest after each fix rather than assuming it works.

  • Agree exit criteria before testing
  • Treat blocked cases as open risk
  • Retest after every fix

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I test an inbound IDoc without the partner?

Use transaction WE19 to create a test IDoc from an existing one or from scratch, edit the data and send it through inbound processing. It is the standard way to simulate a partner message in a test client.

How many test cases are enough?

It depends on risk. A simple outbound notice may need five to ten cases, a complex inbound order interface many more. Cover each message variant, each error path and each partner with different mapping.

Should performance tests be in this matrix?

Include at least one volume and burst case per critical interface, with the volume stated in the input column. Full load testing may need a separate plan and tooling.

Why is there a separate Passed flag?

The status column is a label, and the worksheet cannot sum labels. A numeric flag lets the summary compute the pass rate automatically.

Netray can help build repeatable regression tests for IDoc and API interfaces that run against a copy of your system before each upgrade.
