SAP Packaging Materials ABAP SELECT Generator (Material Type VERP)

Packaging materials in SAP are plain material master records with a packaging material type. This generator writes the Open SQL join across MARA, MAKT and MARC so you can list them by plant.

Optional material group filter

" Add to the WHERE clause when a group is needed:
" AND m~matkl = '[Material group (blank for all)]'

LOOP AT lt_pack ASSIGNING FIELD-SYMBOL(<ls_pack>).
  WRITE: / <ls_pack>-matnr, <ls_pack>-maktx, <ls_pack>-werks.
ENDLOOP.

Material type VERP is the standard SAP type for packaging materials, but many companies create their own types, so confirm in table T134. Fields: MARA-MTART material type, MARA-MATKL material group, MARC-WERKS plant, MARC-DISPO MRP controller, MARC-BESKZ procurement type. Check that your release supports this Open SQL syntax. In some releases the order of clauses differs, so adjust if the syntax check fails.

Ask SAP for packaging data in plain English

Optional review of read-only natural language access to your SAP data.

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.

How to use it

Enter your material type (VERP is the SAP default for packaging), plant and language, then copy the SELECT into a report in SE38 or ADT. Remove the group filter if you want all groups. The result lists material number, description, base unit, gross weight, MRP controller and procurement type for each plant record.

  • Confirm material type in T134
  • Use SE16N to preview the data first
  • Limit rows when testing
  • Add authority checks before production use

Tables involved

MARA holds general material data such as type, group, base unit and weight. MAKT holds descriptions per language, joined with SPRAS. MARC holds plant specific data such as MRP controller and procurement type. The deletion flag MARA-LVORM filters materials marked for deletion. Packaging materials and returnable packaging also relate to packaging instructions in packing-instruction tables, which this query does not cover.

Reading the result

Packaging materials often have a procurement type of external procurement (F). The MRP controller shows who plans them. If a material appears without a description, there is no MAKT entry in your chosen language. Use the output to build a packaging BOM list, check missing weights or find items without an MRP controller before a planning run.

Common mistakes

Assuming every packaging item uses VERP, because many plants use custom types. Forgetting the language filter on MAKT and getting duplicate rows. Running an unrestricted SELECT on a large system. Add authorisation checks and row limits, and test in a sandbox before moving a program to production.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is material type VERP in SAP?

VERP is the standard SAP material type for packaging materials. It controls which views and fields are available in the material master. Many companies define their own types, so check T134 for your configuration.

Which tables hold material master data?

MARA holds general data, MAKT holds descriptions per language, and MARC holds plant data. Other tables such as MARD for storage location stock and MBEW for valuation hold additional views.

Can I run this in SE16N?

SE16N reads one table at a time, so use it to preview MARA by MTART. For the join across three tables you need a report, a CDS view or a query tool.

Will this work in older ECC systems?

The inline DATA declaration and @ escape syntax need ABAP 7.40 or higher. In older releases declare the result table explicitly and drop the @ characters.

Netray can help turn questions like this into read-only ERP queries with the SQL shown, so planners get answers without writing ABAP.
