Cycle Count Frequency Calculator for SAP WM and EWM
Cycle counting replaces the annual shutdown count with small daily counts weighted by item value. This calculator shows how many counts and counters your chosen ABC frequencies create, so the plan is realistic before you configure it in SAP.
Your numbers
Share of counts that need a second count after a discrepancy.
Your results
Counts per hour varies widely with location type and blind counting. Measure it in your own warehouse.
Counts per day and counters vs class A frequency
Sweeps Class A counts per year from 1 to 52, holding your other inputs fixed.
ABC analysis from your SAP stock data
An optional review of how to derive ABC classes and count schedules from consumption and stock history.
Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.
How to use it
Enter how many items or locations fall into class A, B and C. Use whatever unit you plan to count by, items for stock-level counting or bins for location-level counting. Set the counts per year for each class: for example monthly for A, quarterly for B and yearly for C. Add working days, how many counts a person completes per hour and the recount share. The result shows the counts per day and how many full-time counters that creates. Use the chart to see how raising the class A frequency changes staffing.
The formula
Counts per year equal the sum of items in each class multiplied by its frequency. Counts per day equal that divided by working days. Adding the recount allowance multiplies by one plus the recount share. Counter hours equal counts per day divided by counts per hour, and counters equal hours divided by the productive counting hours per person per day. A typical ABC mix concentrates a large part of the counting effort on a small number of high-value items.
- Counts per year = sum of items x frequency
- Counter hours = counts per day x (1 + recount) / counts per hour
- Counters = counter hours / hours per counter
Mapping to SAP
In classic SAP the cycle counting indicator on the material master assigns items to classes and the cycle count run in inventory management creates physical inventory documents based on the days between counts. In WM, inventory by storage bin is handled with physical inventory procedures such as continuous inventory or cycle counting at storage type level. In EWM, physical inventory procedures include cycle counting and low stock counts triggered by events. Use the class counts from your own ABC analysis of consumption value.
Common mistakes
Planners often count too many class C items too often. Because class C is the bulk of the part numbers but a small share of value, a yearly count is usually enough. Another mistake is forgetting recounts and root cause investigation time. A cycle count program that only counts but does not fix process errors will keep finding the same variances. Track inventory record accuracy by class and adjust the frequencies accordingly.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are typical ABC frequencies?
Many operations count A items monthly or more often, B items quarterly and C items once or twice a year. The right numbers depend on value, velocity and measured accuracy, not on a fixed rule.
Should I count by item or by bin?
Count by the unit your errors occur in. Location-level counting finds misplaced stock and is easier to direct on the floor. Item-level counting is better for valuation focus. Many sites combine both.
How fast can someone count?
It depends on location type: full pallet checks can reach 60 or more per hour, while counting loose small parts can be below 20. Time a sample of each location type.
Does cycle counting replace the annual count?
Auditors and local rules differ. In many jurisdictions, a well controlled cycle count program can replace the full count with auditor approval. Confirm with your finance team.
