South Africa VAT Calculator: Add or Remove 15% VAT and Work Out Net VAT Payable

This calculator does the arithmetic behind a South African VAT return: strip VAT from a VAT-inclusive amount, add it to an exclusive one, and net output tax against input tax. It also keeps zero-rated exports visible so they are not mixed into the 15% base.

Automate the VAT split from your ERP

Optional: we review how your ERP codes VAT and show a read-only query that produces this split each period.

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.

How to use the calculator

Enter your standard-rated sales and tell the tool whether the figure already includes VAT. Do the same for purchases. Add exports and other zero-rated supplies in their own box, because they carry no output tax but still count as taxable supplies. The result shows output tax, claimable input tax and the net amount payable. A negative net figure means the period produces a refund position, which SARS may verify before paying.

  • Match the basis (inclusive or exclusive) to the document you are reading.
  • Use the claimable slider for apportioned or denied input tax.
  • Run one period at a time, matching your VAT cycle.

The formulas behind it

To remove VAT from an inclusive amount, divide by 1 plus the rate: R1,150 inclusive at 15% is R1,000 exclusive and R150 VAT. To add VAT, multiply by the rate. Net payable equals output tax minus input tax. The standard rate has been 15% since April 2018, and exports of goods are generally zero-rated if the documentary proof is held. The calculator uses exactly those relationships and nothing hidden.

Reading the result against your ledger

Compare the output tax with your sales VAT control account and the input tax with your purchases VAT control account. A gap usually points to a posting error, a late supplier invoice, or a document missing a valid tax invoice. If you run SAP, Sage, Pastel or Infor, reconcile the calculator result with the VAT report for the same tax period, not the calendar month, when your cycle is bi-monthly.

  • Check that every claimed input has a valid tax invoice.
  • Confirm export proof is on file before using 0%.
  • Review capital goods and imported services separately.

Common mistakes

The most frequent errors are applying 15% to an amount that already includes VAT, claiming input tax on denied items, and forgetting that imported goods carry VAT at the border, assessed on customs value plus duty plus a 10% uplift. Timing also matters: tax invoices are claimed in the period they relate to, with limited look-back, so late documents need care.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the VAT rate in South Africa?

The standard rate is 15%, in force since April 2018. Some supplies are zero-rated, such as qualifying exports and certain basic foodstuffs, and others are exempt. Always confirm the treatment of your specific product before filing.

How do I remove VAT from a VAT-inclusive amount?

Divide the inclusive amount by 1.15 to get the exclusive amount. The VAT is the inclusive amount minus that result. For example, R2,300 inclusive gives R2,000 exclusive and R300 VAT.

Are exports charged VAT in South Africa?

Exported goods are generally zero-rated, meaning 0% VAT, provided you hold the required documentary proof such as customs release and transport documents. The sale still counts as a taxable supply and is reported on the return.

Does this replace my VAT 201?

No. It is a calculation aid for checking figures. The return itself is submitted through SARS eFiling, and your ERP or accounting system remains the record of truth.

If your VAT numbers still come from manual exports, Netray can wire a read-only ERP query that produces the same split every period, with the query shown for audit.
