Simplified. SAP may also use routing-based scheduling for in-house lead time, and calendar rules can shift dates. Treat results as a planning check.

How to use it

Choose external or in-house procurement, then enter the planned delivery time, goods receipt processing time or in-house production time from the material master. Add daily usage and safety stock to see the reorder level and how many days an order lot covers. Move the planned delivery time and watch the chart to see the stock impact of a slower supplier.

The logic in SAP

For externally procured materials, MRP uses the planned delivery time plus the goods receipt processing time. For in-house produced materials, it uses the in-house production time, which can come from the material master or from lead time scheduling of the routing, plus goods receipt processing. Reorder level equals demand during the lead time plus safety stock.

  • External: PDT + GR time
  • In-house: production time + GR time
  • Reorder level = daily usage x lead time + safety stock

Common mistakes

Entering delivery time in working days when the field uses calendar days. Forgetting that a quoted supplier lead time is not the same as actual receipt performance. Using one average daily usage for a very lumpy item will mislead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is planned delivery time in calendar or working days?

Planned delivery time in the material master is expressed in calendar days. The factory calendar then adjusts scheduling for the plant. Check your system setup if dates look off.

What is GR processing time?

It is the number of working days required after receipt of the goods for inspection and putaway before the material is available. It is added to the lead time for external procurement.

How is lead time used by MRP?

MRP schedules backward from the requirement date by the lead time to set the order start or release date, so a wrong value moves every proposal.

Does this replace safety stock statistics?

No. Safety stock here is an input. To size it statistically, use a dedicated safety stock calculator.
