SAP MRP Material Parameters Worksheet

Material master MRP views hold dozens of settings and most plants never review them as a set. This worksheet lets a planner list the key parameters and see lead time demand and safety stock days at a glance.

MRP type codes shown are standard examples: PD is MRP, VB is manual reorder point, VM is automatic reorder point, ND is no planning, VV is forecast-based. Lot size keys: EX lot for lot, FX fixed, HB replenish to maximum stock, WB weekly, MB monthly. Your customizing may add more.

MRP parameter health check

Optional: we can review your parameters against consumption data.

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.

How to use the worksheet

Export or type the materials you want to review, then fill MRP type, controller, procurement type, lot size key, safety stock, average daily usage and total replenishment lead time. The sheet calculates safety stock days and demand over lead time. Sort outliers, correct them in the material master, and keep the exported file as the baseline.

What the numbers mean

Safety stock days is the safety stock divided by daily usage. Very low values on long lead time parts suggest stockout risk, very high values suggest excess working capital. Lead time demand shows how much will be consumed while you wait for replenishment. Total replenishment lead time in SAP is the planned delivery time plus goods receipt processing time for external parts, or in-house production time for made parts.

  • Under 1 day of safety stock on a long lead time part is a flag
  • Check MRP type matches planning intent
  • Lot for lot suits high-value items
  • Check controller assignment

Common mistakes

Leaving obsolete planned delivery times that no longer reflect supplier reality is a top issue. Using fixed lot size where lot for lot is intended inflates stock. Setting safety stock by habit instead of variability wastes cash.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between MRP type PD and VB?

PD is deterministic MRP driven by requirements and receipts. VB is manual reorder point planning, where an order proposal is created when stock falls to the reorder point you maintain.

Where is total replenishment lead time in SAP?

It is calculated from planned delivery time, goods receipt processing time or in-house production time depending on procurement type. Scheduling in the routing can also determine in-house lead time.

How is safety stock set?

It can be entered manually or derived from a range of coverage profile. Neither is automatic statistics, so many plants calculate it outside and load it in.

Can I load changes in bulk?

Yes. Mass change tools or the migration cockpit can update many materials. Always test in a quality system first.
