SAP Variant Condition Pricing Worksheet
In SAP Variant Configuration, price differences between options are usually carried by variant conditions, not by separate materials. This worksheet lets you list every characteristic value that moves the price, its variant condition key and the surcharge, then check the configured price before anyone touches the condition records.
| Variant condition key | Characteristic | Characteristic value | Surcharge basis | Base price | Surcharge | Configured price | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
$4,850 | |||||||
$5,300 | |||||||
$4,480 | |||||||
$5,040 | |||||||
$4,320 |
Variant conditions in SAP are condition records on a variant condition key assigned to a characteristic value. Use one row per value, keep the key short, and record the basis so the condition type setup matches.
Variant pricing review
Optional expert review of your variant condition list against your pricing procedure.
Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.
How to use the worksheet
Add one row for each characteristic value that changes price. Enter the variant condition key you plan to assign in the characteristic value (the key is stored on the value and picked up by the pricing procedure through the condition type for variant pricing, commonly VA00). Enter the base price and the surcharge, and the worksheet shows the configured price and the average uplift. Export to Excel to hand the list to the pricing team.
- One row per value, not per characteristic
- Keep the key unique and readable
- Record the basis so percent and fixed amounts are not mixed up
- Use the same values you will use in your test sales orders
The method behind variant pricing
A configured sales order item carries the selected characteristic values. For each value that has a variant condition key, pricing reads the matching condition record for the key and adds the amount to the price of the configurable material. The base price comes from the material price condition (for example PR00), the surcharge from the variant condition type. Because the keys are read at pricing time, a missing record does not stop the order, it silently prices at zero for that value.
Reading the result
The configured price column is base plus surcharge for a single option. The summary shows the average uplift as a percent of the base, which is a quick sanity check against the price list approved by sales. If one row shows an uplift far from the others, check whether it should be a percentage condition. Always test the full combination in a sales order, because variant conditions add up across all selected values.
Common mistakes
The most frequent defect is a characteristic value with a variant condition key but no valid condition record for the sales organisation, distribution channel or date. Others are reusing one key across values with different prices, forgetting currency conversion for export price lists, and changing a key after records exist. Keep this worksheet under version control with the transport it belongs to.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a variant condition key in SAP?
It is a key assigned to a characteristic value that pricing uses to find a variant condition record. When the value is selected in a configuration, pricing reads the record for that key and adds the amount to the item price.
Can variant conditions be percentage based?
Yes. The condition type determines the calculation type, so you can set up fixed amount, percentage or quantity based variant conditions. Record the basis in the worksheet so the condition type chosen matches what pricing agreed.
Why does my configured item price at zero for an option?
Usually there is no valid condition record for the key in the sales area and date, or the key was not assigned to the value. Check the pricing analysis on the order item and the key on the characteristic value.
Does this replace the SAP condition record screens?
No. It is a planning and review aid. You still create the condition records in SAP. The worksheet helps you agree keys and amounts and export them for review first.
