SAP Configuration Profile Setup Template

A configuration profile ties a configurable material to its class, dependencies and settings, and it is where many VC defects start. This template makes you write the setup down in a consistent form that engineering, sales and support can all read.

SAP Configuration Profile Setup Template

Configuration profile

Company: Acme Pumps Ltd Configurable material: PUMP-CONFIG-100 Plant: 1000 Profile: PUMP_STD Owner: A. Kumar Date: 2026-10-20

Class and characteristics

Material is assigned to class PUMP_CLASS (class type 300). All characteristics used in dependencies must belong to this class or be set as BOM item characteristics.

BOM and routing settings

BOM usage: 1 Production Explosion: Multilevel Check that BOM items carry selection conditions and that the BOM is in the same plant as the profile.

Dependencies

Precondition on SEAL_TYPE for pumps above 22 kW. Selection condition on BOM item 0030 for SS316 housing. Procedure PUMP_PRICE_CLASS sets price class from variant table.

Pre-release checks

CheckResultNotes
Material type configurable and flag set
Class assigned and values released
Dependencies status released
Test configuration in sales order
Configured BOM explodes correctly
Pricing condition test passed

Approvals

This is a documentation aid. Confirm field names and options against your SAP release, since screens differ between ECC and S/4HANA and between the classic and advanced variant configuration.

Configuration audit

Optional review of your configuration profiles and dependency set.

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.

How to use the template

Fill the fields with the details of the configurable material, then list the dependency summary in plain language. Export to PDF or Word and attach it to the design document or to the transport request. Keep one copy per configurable material or per product family.

  • One profile document per configurable material
  • Write dependencies in plain words, not code
  • Record the plant and BOM usage
  • Tick the pre-release table in a test client first

What a configuration profile controls

The profile, created with CU41, is assigned to the configurable material and tells the system which class and which BOM to use during configuration. It can also carry dependencies and settings that govern how configuration behaves, for example whether the BOM is exploded multilevel. Without a valid profile the material cannot be configured in a sales order or a production order.

Reading the pre-release table

Each row is a gate. If any answer is No, the material is not ready for sales. The test configuration row is the most important because it uses the real chain: characteristic selection, dependency check, BOM explosion and pricing. Record the result with the test order number so the evidence is traceable.

Common mistakes

Teams forget to release dependencies, so they do not execute. They assign a class of the wrong type, or put BOM items in a different plant. Another common defect is copying a profile from a similar material and keeping dependencies that refer to characteristics the new class does not have.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a configuration profile in SAP?

It is the control record for a configurable material. It holds the class link, dependencies and settings that govern configuration. It is maintained with CU41 and assigned to the material.

Which class type is used for variant configuration?

Class type 300 is the standard for variant configuration. Characteristics are assigned to this class and the class is assigned to the configurable material.

Do I need a profile for each plant?

It depends on how the material and BOM are set up. Many companies keep one profile per material and plant combination where the BOM or plant specific rules differ.

Does this work for advanced variant configuration?

The ideas are similar, but advanced variant configuration in S/4HANA uses a different modelling approach and tools. Use this as a starting point and adapt the sections to your model.

If you want to check configuration profiles across many materials against the classes and dependencies in your system, we can build a read-only audit.
