How to Complete an Operation in Epicor Kinetic (Plus Time Entry and Corrective Action)

Question
how to complete an operation in epicor

Also searched as

  • epicor kinetic time and expense entry
  • epicor kinetic customer managed inventory
  • epicor kinetic corrective action
  • epicor labor entry complete operation

Short answer

An operation is completed by reporting quantity and marking it complete on a labor transaction, either through the Kinetic MES shop floor screens or Labor Entry in the back office. The operation's complete flag then lets the next operation or job receipt proceed. Time and expense, customer managed inventory and corrective action are separate modules, each with its own entry screen and approval flow.

Applies to: Epicor 10.x and Kinetic, with or without MES

How to complete an operation

  1. 1Check the job is released and the operation is the next one to run. Operations behind an uncompleted prior step may be blocked, depending on your sequencing setup.
  2. 2On the shop floor, sign in to the MES (Manufacturing Execution System) screen, find the job and operation, and start your labor.
  3. 3When work finishes, end the activity and enter the quantity completed and any scrap quantity with a reason code.
  4. 4Tick the operation complete option when this is the final quantity. Without it the operation stays open for further reporting.
  5. 5If you are correcting after the fact, use Labor Entry in the back office to add or adjust the transaction, then approve it if approvals are required.
  6. 6Verify in Job Tracker or Job Entry that the operation shows complete and the quantity matches the job.
  7. 7Receive the finished quantity to stock or to the next job with Job Receipts to Inventory when the last operation completes.

Why operations will not complete

Typical blocks are an unreleased job, a prior operation incomplete when sequencing is enforced, missing employee setup or permissions, and quantity rules that prevent over-reporting. The error text usually names which rule fired; start with that message rather than changing the job.

If production quantity exceeds the job quantity, you may need to increase the job quantity or accept the over-run within the job's tolerance.

Time and expense entry

Time and Expense Entry is for non-production time (project hours, indirect time) and employee expenses, entered by employees or on their behalf and then submitted for approval. After approval, costs flow to the project or cost center according to your setup.

Production labor is not entered here; it goes through shop floor labor entry. Mixing the two causes double counting or missing hours, so make the rule clear to employees.

Customer managed inventory and corrective action

Customer managed inventory covers stock held at a customer site or tracked on their behalf. The details depend on your licensed modules and configuration, so confirm with your administrator which tools you have before building process around them.

Corrective action sits in the quality area: a non-conformance or audit finding is recorded, root cause and action assigned, and the result verified and closed. Link it to the part, job or supplier so repeat issues are visible.

Common pitfalls

  • !Forgetting the complete flag leaves operations open and blocks downstream receipts.
  • !Reporting scrap without a reason code makes scrap reports useless.
  • !Entering production time in Time and Expense double counts labor.
  • !Closing a corrective action without verification leaves the same defect to recur.

How an ERP-grounded AI assistant handles this

An assistant over your job and labor tables can list operations that have quantity reported but are not marked complete, or jobs idle for days at one work center. It reads the data and shows the query; the shop floor still records the completion.

How to Issue Material in Epicor Kinetic

In Epicor Kinetic you issue material to a job either manually with Issue Material (against the job material line, from a bin and lot) or automatically through backflush when labor is reported. Substitutions are handled by changing the job material part or using the alternate part on the material line, and requests can be routed through the material queue so the warehouse pulls and issues them.

Error fix

Epicor Kinetic: Job Will Not Release in Job Entry

A job in Epicor Kinetic will not release when it is not Engineered, when a material or operation fails validation, or when the part revision on the job is not approved. Open Job Entry, confirm the Engineered flag first, fix any part, revision or method errors shown in the exception panel, then tick Released.

How to close job costing and the accounting period in Epicor

Before closing an accounting period in Epicor, run Capture Costs (or confirm background costing is current) to post all labor, material, subcontract, and burden to jobs, review the WIP report for jobs that should be closed or investigated, close completed jobs so their costs relieve WIP, and only then close the GL period, since GL close blocks further transaction posting into it.

Fixing Epicor BusinessObjectException: BPM Directive Errors

A BusinessObjectException that says "A Business Process Management (BPM) directive has raised the following error" means a directive on that business object stopped the transaction, either deliberately via a Raise Exception widget or accidentally via an unhandled .NET error in Custom Code. Expand the InnerException on the error dialog to see the real message and the directive name, then open BPM Designer for that object and method to find the widget that fired.

Fixing a Slow Epicor BAQ (Business Activity Query)

A slow BAQ in Epicor is usually caused by unindexed join columns, a subquery or calculated field forcing a table scan, or the BAQ pulling far more rows than the dashboard actually displays before filtering client-side. Fix it by reading the SQL Server execution plan Epicor generates, moving filters into the BAQ criteria instead of the dashboard filter panel, and replacing subqueries with joins where possible.

Epicor MRP Runs but Generates No Suggestions

When Epicor's MRP process completes without a job or purchase suggestion for a part you expect one for, the cause is almost always the part's own configuration (Part Class Type, Make Direct, Non-MRP flag, planning Time Fence) or the demand not being linked in a way MRP recognizes, not a defect in the MRP engine. Work through the part's Planning tab, its safety stock and lead time setup, and the demand source (sales order line status, job material requirement) before assuming the run itself failed.
