SAP QM Inspection Plan Design Template
An inspection plan built straight in QP01 without a written design usually gets rebuilt twice. This template captures the decisions that matter before you open the transaction: scope, trigger, sampling, operations and characteristics.

SAP QM Inspection Plan Design Template
Inspection Plan Design: Hydraulic manifold block, anodized
Company: Acme Precision Ltd Plant: 1000 Material: FG-48213 Plan group: Manifold final inspection Prepared by: A. Kumar, QM consultant Date: 2026-10-20
Scope and trigger
Inspection type: Final inspection before delivery The inspection lot is created automatically when the inspection type is active in the QM view of the material master (MM02) and the triggering business event occurs. State below any manual lot creation (QA01) that is also allowed.
Sampling and dynamic modification
Sampling procedure: Fixed sample, 5 pieces per lot Dynamic modification rule: Skip every 3rd lot after 10 accepted lots Record the quality level start value and the rule at the inspection plan header or at the material and inspection type level, as decided in design.

Design notes
Characteristics are quantitative with results recorded per sample unit. Results are recorded in QE51N and transferred from CMM export on the shop floor.
Approvals
Starting point for your own blueprint. Check field names and available inspection types against your system configuration, because inspection types and usage values are customized per client.
Review your inspection plan design
Send us your completed design for an optional expert review against common SAP QM master data pitfalls.
Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.
How to use the template
Fill in the header fields for the material and plant, choose the inspection type, and describe the sampling procedure and dynamic modification rule in plain words. Then complete the operations and characteristics tables in the exported document. The output is a document the quality engineer and the consultant both sign, so the configuration and master data team builds from one agreed source.
- Complete one document per material or per family of similar materials
- Agree the inspection type before talking about characteristics
- List every characteristic with limits and unit, even if the unit is only text
- Attach the drawing or control plan revision that the limits come from
What an inspection plan in SAP QM contains
An inspection plan is a task list with a header, one or more operations at work centers, and inspection characteristics under each operation. Characteristics reference master inspection characteristics created in QS21 or are defined locally in the plan. Sampling procedures and dynamic modification rules control how much is inspected. The plan is assigned to the material through the material assignment and is found by the system when the inspection lot is created.
Design decisions people skip
Most rework comes from a short list of undecided points. Who records results and where, whether results are transferred from measuring equipment, how defects are recorded and what the result recording type is for each characteristic. Decide whether the characteristic is required, because a required characteristic must be closed before the usage decision can be made. Also decide how the plan is versioned: change numbers and validity dates decide whether open inspection lots pick up the new plan.
- Quantitative or qualitative recording per characteristic
- Single result or summarized recording
- Required versus optional characteristics
- Plan change management with change numbers
Common mistakes
Building the plan before the QM view of the material master is ready, so no lot is created. Copying a plan from another plant and keeping its work centers. Mixing sample sizes of different characteristics inside one operation without understanding that the lot sample is driven by the sampling procedure of each characteristic. Forgetting to define who owns the inspection plan after go-live.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a separate document for each inspection plan?
Not always. Materials that share the same operations and characteristics can share one design document with a list of materials. Create a separate document when the sampling procedure, inspection type or characteristics differ.
Which transaction creates an inspection plan?
QP01 creates an inspection plan, QP02 changes it and QP03 displays it. Master inspection characteristics are created in QS21 and sampling procedures are maintained in the QM configuration.
Is this template specific to S/4HANA?
The design content applies to ECC and S/4HANA QM alike. Screens and some master data apps differ in S/4HANA, so verify the transactions you use against your release before you build.
Who should sign the design?
At minimum the quality engineer who owns the requirements, the SAP QM consultant who builds the plan, and the quality manager accountable for the control. Add the production owner when operations are in-process.
If your inspection plans live in spreadsheets and you want them loaded and checked against SAP data, Netray can help review the master data design with you.
