SAP S/4HANA modules: fit and gap explorer

SAP S/4HANA is SAP's ERP on the SAP HANA database, run on-premise or as SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition. This explorer maps the functional areas in the SAP S/4HANA 2025 Feature Scope Description to your manufacturing requirements and shows whether each fit sits in the Enterprise Management base, in Enhanced LoB Functions that may need a separate license, in a compatibility pack, or in a separate SAP or partner product. Anything we could not confirm in SAP documentation is marked verify with vendor.

50 modules and products mapped (29 standard, 11 optional, 10 add-on, separate or third party) against 69 manufacturing requirements. Free, no login needed.

Your own requirements

Not in the library? Add it. It is listed in the report and the engineer review, but not scored.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Pick your requirements

Start from a preset such as Repetitive / automotive supplier or Multi-plant, multi-country, or tick requirements one by one. Set each to Must, Should or Nice to have.

  2. 2

    Read the fit

Each requirement shows the S/4HANA capability that covers it, for example PP/DS, Quality Management or Extended Warehouse Management, and whether SAP lists it in the base scope or in Enhanced LoB Functions.

  3. 3

    Check the licensing column

The module map flags features SAP places in Enhanced LoB Functions or Compatibility Packs. These change license and roadmap decisions, so review them with your SAP account team before you sign.

  4. 4

    Compare and export

Compare the same requirement set with another ERP, then download the fit-gap report as PDF, Excel, Word or CSV, or save it to your Netray account.

S/4HANA module questions

What modules does SAP S/4HANA include?

SAP describes S/4HANA by line of business rather than by the old ECC module codes. The 2025 Feature Scope Description covers Finance, Sales, Sourcing and Procurement, Manufacturing (production planning, production operations, quality management), Supply Chain (inventory, delivery and transportation, warehousing, order promising), Service, Asset Management, R&D and Engineering (portfolio and project management, product development), Human Resources, and the ABAP and analytics technology layer. Consultants still use FI, CO, SD, MM, PP, QM, PM and PS as shorthand for the same areas.

Which S/4HANA features may need a separate license?

SAP's Feature Scope Description places features in four chapters: Enterprise Management (the base), Enhanced LoB Functions, Industry-Specific LoB Functions and Compatibility Packs. SAP says features outside Enterprise Management might need a separate license. In this map that includes PP/DS, advanced ATP, Advanced Variant Configuration, the advanced Extended Warehouse Management features, PEO, Group Reporting, Product Compliance and Payroll Management.

What is the compatibility scope and why does it matter for a fit-gap?

Compatibility Packs are classic ECC functions that still run in S/4HANA under usage rights set in the Software Use Rights document. In the 2025 FSD they include classic MRP with demand forecasting and forecast-based planning, Sales and Operations Planning, PI sheets and electronic batch records, the classic Customer Service installed base, SD Rebate Processing and EC-CS consolidation. Mark a requirement that relies on them for a roadmap check.

Does SAP S/4HANA include a warehouse management system?

Yes. Basic Warehouse Management and Stock Room Management are part of Enterprise Management, with bins, handling units, RF transactions and cycle counting. Waves, slotting, labor management, yard management, cross-docking and warehouse billing are Extended Warehouse Management features under Enhanced LoB Functions. EWM can also run as a decentralized system.

Is PP/DS part of the S/4HANA license?

PP/DS is embedded in S/4HANA, but SAP lists it under Enhanced LoB Functions, which may need a separate license. SAP Note 2372590 describes the differences between embedded and standalone PP/DS. SAP positions PP/DS for critical products and bottleneck resources, with MRP Live for the rest.

Is S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition functionally the same as on-premise?

Both follow the same S/4HANA release names: SAP publishes training for SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition 2025 FPS1, and the on-premise 2025 release has matching feature packages. This map uses the on-premise Feature Scope Description. Hosting, operations and contract terms differ, so confirm any scope or licensing differences for private edition with SAP.

How is the fit score calculated?

Each selected requirement is weighted by priority: Must 3, Should 2, Nice to have 1. A native capability scores 100 percent, a separate SAP product 75, a partner product 50 and a gap 0. Native here includes Enhanced LoB Functions, so read the licensing note on the module before you count it as included.

How current is this SAP S/4HANA module map?

It follows the SAP S/4HANA 2025 Feature Scope Description, version 3.0 of 2026-10-07 for Feature Package Stack 02. SAP updates the document with each feature package, and your license defines what you may use, so treat this as a starting point for demos and contract review.

Earlier releases (2023, 2022) differ in places. SAP says features outside Enterprise Management might need a separate license; confirm your contract and the Software Use Rights document with SAP.
